Inventory Setup
Introduction
This tutorial is designed to assist you in the set up of your inventory or list of items you will use for bidding and invoicing
What you will learn in this session is how to determine a numbering scheme for your inventory, as well as, how to set up your inventory items in the SLICEplus software
What you will see are various screen shots from the SLICEplus software and associated notes about the screen in the notes section at the bottom of your screen
Additional information on how to set up the software is covered in classes, in the SLICEplus manual, other tutorials, and the F1 function key onscreen help feature
Inventory  - a Master Table
Inventory and factors are used in bidding to calculate your proposed price.  Factors are made up of labor, equipment, and inventory items (other materials), all set up in the Master and Control Tables
Even if you do not physically hold an inventory of items, you will need to set up inventory for use in bidding and invoicing

Inventory Numbering
Inventory Format – NNNN-NNN
First two (2) numbers represent the broad category or product group
For example, Shade Trees, Deciduous Shrubs, Evergreens, etc.

Next two (2) numbers represent the species or variety, in alphabetical order
For example, Acer, Aesculus, Betula, etc.
Inventory Numbering
Inventory Format – NNNN-NNN
First number following the dash is how the item is measured
For example, caliper, container size,  or weight
Inventory Numbering
Inventory Format – NNNN-NNN
Last two numbers following the dash designates the size based on how the item is measured
Inventory Numbering
Inventory Format – NNNN-NNN
Example: 0040-040
00 designates shade tree
40 indicates a  sugar maple
-0 represents caliper
40 indicates 4”
So this is a 4” caliper Sugar Maple (shade tree)
Types of Inventory Items
SLICEplus uses Plants, Materials, and Operations as items in its inventory
Additionally, for invoicing purposes you may create items that represent a lump sum amount
We will address each type individually in this tutorial
Inventory - Materials
Materials are items that are used when planting another item or when performing an operation (I.e. fertilizer, stakes, mulch, etc.)
Materials may actually be plants (like annuals in a “color” operation) if used with an operation
Materials are used to create factors, which are used in bid calculation
Materials will show on the list of items needed for the job (shipping ticket) and job costing

The remaining fields – colored in yellow are for the Nursery and Retail Packages.  They will not appear in the Landscape and Maintenance Packages. However, if you have the Nursery or Retail package and share your inventory between them, you will need to complete the yellow fields.  Please see the tutorial on Inventory for Nursery and Retail or refer to your manual.

Factor Codes
A factor is the labor, other materials and equipment needed for planting a certain caliper of tree or for performing an operation. A factor is a default code that is set up to pull all miscellaneous materials, equipment and labor hours together as a set. This factor is then entered on inventory items that correspond with its information. When that inventory item is placed on a bid, this factor information is automatically added into the bid
Factor Numbering
It is important to be consistent with your inventory when numbering your factors.  Based on the inventory numbering scheme already mentioned, for item 0020-020 (Red Maple, 2” caliper), you may have a factor code 00-020 assigned (factor for shade tree, 2” caliper).  This factor would also be assigned to 0040-020 (Sugar Maple, 2” caliper).  Operations work in a similar fashion.

Summary
In this session you have developed a numbering scheme for your items and have seen how to enter your inventory into SLICEplus
To apply this training, open your own SLICEplus application and minimize this tutorial.  Then maximize the tutorial on your screen.  Follow the tutorial step by step, entering a real item into your inventory, working back and forth between the tutorial and the actual software
